This weekend I will be participating in my third Pedal the Cause event. This is a fantastic annual event that strives for a world without cancer. Riders will participate in 20 to 100 mile rides and fundraise before and after the event for cancer research. Cancer survivors and those currently undergoing caner treatments also participate in Pedal.
I am riding under Team Powered by Hope which is lead by cancer survivors and Ironman finishers; Teri Griege and Renee Van Horn. Both are incredible women and athletes. Teri wrote this message the other day, “I notice that tomorrow is September 17th. Seven years ago on 9/17, I received by diagnosis of Stage IV colon cancer– 5 year survival rate of 6%. Not sure what the 7 year survival rate was, all I know is that I am still here today! There are many reasons why I believe I am still here. No one can deny that one of the reasons has been the exceptional care I have received at Siteman Cancer Center. One of the ways I say ‘thank you’ is to ride in pedal and raise (lots) of money for cancer research. 100% of the money raised at the Pedal the Cause goes to Siteman Cancer Center/ Washington University Hospital and St.Louis Children’s Hospital for cancer research.”
Every year the team rides for a child who is currently undergoing cancer treatment. This year the Team Powered By Hope 2016 Ride for a Child is Allison. She is an 11 year old girl diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma. The team is also highlighting team member Nicole Newman.
